The transitional season between winter and spring is genuinely one of the hardest to dress for. The temperature swings wildly. Morning and evening are cold. Midday is warm. You packed away your winter coat but your summer pieces are not ready yet. This is the wardrobe moment most people just default to wearing their winter clothes with the jacket open. There is a better way.
Your transitional wardrobe anchors
The trench coat. The single most useful piece for transitional dressing. Lightweight enough not to overheat, structured enough to feel intentional, and suitable for everything from work to weekends. A classic camel or beige trench is the one transitional outerwear investment worth making if you do not already have one.
Denim jacket. For days when even a trench feels too much, a denim jacket covers the temperature gap perfectly. It works with dresses (tuck one side in), over tailoring (deliberately casual), and over every casual knit combination you own.
Lighter-weight knits. Fine-gauge cotton or silk-blend knits replace your heavy winter woolens. They are warm enough for a cool day, not too warm for a mild one, and they sit flat under lighter jackets without the bulk. Invest in one or two in your most-worn neutral.
Loafers. The perfect transitional shoe. Not as wintery as ankle boots, not as bare as sandals. They ground any outfit and work with jeans, tailored trousers, dresses, and midi skirts with equal ease.
How to transition your existing wardrobe
You do not need to buy anything. Take your winter outfits and simply swap the coat for a lighter layer, and the heavy boot for a loafer or flat shoe. Take your summer dresses and wear them with a fine knit layered over or underneath, and a jacket on top. You will be surprised how much mileage your existing pieces have in the in-between months.
The one colour shift that signals spring
Move away from the very dark palettes of winter toward slightly lighter neutrals and your first soft colours: a dusty lilac, a soft sage, a warm ecru. You do not need to commit to bright colours. The shift from charcoal and black to taupe and cream is enough to signal the season without feeling costumey. One spring-leaning piece in an otherwise neutral outfit is all it takes.
